The playscape at SJMS incorporates a wide-range of play and recreational learning environments. An 1/8 mile running track structures activity areas in close proximity to each other including swings, climbing walls, and a zip-line . Loose groves of trees and abrupt landforms provide both bridges and boundaries between various play areas.
sport courts & fields
Two hardscape elements, the running track and game court, allow the school to incorporate the outdoor space more fully into their physical education and after school programs. Additionally, located in a dense historic neighborhood, these elements invite the surrounding neighbors to utilize the property for physical recreation throughout the year.

This space accommodates a variety of features and functions in a small space. Surface materials (stone, wood, and turf) define adjacent spaces but also allow for interactions across the same.
The quarry
Reusing elements from the existing play equipment, the quarry provides a natural climbing and gathering space allowing for students of a range of ages to explore and use the space as they desire.
